Sir Alex Ferguson caused a stir when naming Scholes in his squad for an FA Cup third round clash with Manchester City earlier in January.

Scholes' appearance came on the back of reports suggesting he was set to be lured out of retirement - with it being claimed United players had pleaded with Ferguson to make the call.

But it is Scholes who made the first move, after being drawn to make a comeback after seeing the players training in his role as a coach.

"After coming in for the last three or four months, still seeing people and doing a bit of training, I was missing it more than I thought," Scholes said.

"I saw the manager and told him I wanted to come back playing. I didn't know what his reaction would be. Thankfully, it was positive.

"I missed it and decided to give it another go."

Scholes is set to feature as United take on Liverpool in the FA Cup on Saturday.
