Ballack open to talks over return

January 10, 2012

Michael Ballack is open to clear-the-air talks with the German Football Association following the controversially abrupt end to his international career last year.

Former Germany captain Ballack fell out of favour with coach Joachim Low and turned down the chance of a farewell appearance in a friendly against Brazil last August.

The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder claimed Low did not consult him about his decision to no longer consider the 35-year-old for selection.

However, the prospect of him appearing on last time for Germany has been mentioned by future German FA (DFB) president Wolfgang Niersbach, who will replace Dr Theo Zwanziger in March.

And Ballack says he would be willing to discuss the possibility. "I don't want to comment on speculation, but if Wolfgang Niersbach does want to talk to me, then of course I would do that,'' he said in quotes reported by Bild.

Ballack has the support of his club's director of sport Rudi Voller, who has tried to revive talks of an official send-off for Ballack, who captained Germany between 2004 and 2010.

"We are trying to assist efforts to give Michael a worthy farewell which his overall performances (for Germany) deserve,'' he said last week.
