Rutten announced last week he would not be renewing his existing deal which expires at the end of the season but he believes continuity is important and has tipped Cocu, currently one of his assistants, to take over.

"I would back Phillip Cocu to be head coach,'' Rutten said in the AD newspaper. "You could talk about any of my assistants but he should be mentioned first.''

Cocu is thought to be interested in the post although it is not known how he will combine it with his work as part of Holland boss Bert van Marwijk's backroom staff.

"Phillip should want the job too,'' added Rutten. "But the most important thing is what fits best with PSV.''

Rutten insists he has no plans beyond the end of the season and has not ruled out taking a break from football. He said: "Taking a sabbatical is an option. I have been 20 years on the road.

"I can say from the bottom of my heart that nothing is in the pipeline. I am ambitious but not in any particular direction.''
