Harry Redknapp has urged Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to start new talks with Luka Modric over extending his contract after the Croatian capped an excellent display against Liverpool on Sunday with a stunning goal.

Modric, 26, was the subject of a long-running tug-of-war between Spurs and Chelsea over the summer, with Levy resolutely resisting the Blues' advances.

At one stage there was a £40 million bid on the table, but the White Hart Lane chief was determined to hang on to the club's prized asset and when the transfer window slammed shut, Modric was still a Tottenham player.

And despite the playmaker public stating his desire to leave the club for Chelsea, Redknapp believes Modric is now "getting on with it" and is keen to try to tempt him with a new contract offer.

"Luka is fine now, he's just getting on with it," Redknapp said. "I think the chairman will sit down with him and discuss his contract. That's what I'd like to happen.

"The chairman has said he would give it six or seven weeks, sit down and have a chat with him. It was a great strike. That's why we were offered £40 million for him, because he's a top player.

"If he is worth £40 million then life tells you that you have to be paid accordingly doesn't it? You can't say he is worth £40 million and want to pay him the wages of someone who is worth £5 million. 'That doesn't ring true does it? You have to look after the boy and I'm sure we will do that and his future is hopefully here.

"We have to convince him that his future is here and make it right for the boy, that's only fair as well, and I'm sure the chairman will be fair and make sure he does that.''
