Fiorentina have bolstered their attacking options ahead of the new Serie A season by signing Velez Sarsfield striker Santiago Silva.

Nicknamed 'Tank' because of his imposing physique, Silva scored seven goals in 13 goals for Velez last season to help fire the club to Argentina's Clausura title.

His strike rate caught the eye of Fiorentina's South American scouts and La Viola moved quickly to secure the services of the 30-year-old journeyman, who has now changed club 13 times in his career.

"We received a fax from Fiorentina informing us that they would pay the release clause stipulated in Santiago Silva's contract and that they would also pay the necessary taxes," Velez president Fernando Raffaini confirmed.

"The player told us that he felt it was a one-off opportunity to try his luck in Europe and that he wanted to go, so that is what will happen.

"This is not up to us and we are not doing this because we need the money. We have already offered the player improved terms, but this was his decision."

Reports in Italy and Argentina suggest Fiorentina will pay around €1.7 million for Silva, who follows former Velez team-mates Ricardo Alvarez and Maximiliano Moralez to Italy after the pair signed for Inter Milan and Atalanta respectively this summer.
