Rangers have already signed one Spanish defender, Juan Manuel Ortiz, from Almeria and manager Ally McCoist is eager to sign another.

Rodriguez, 23, has been scouted on a number of occasions and Gers director of football Gordon Smith told BBC Scotland: "He's a player we're considering. We've spoken to Espanyol and we'll speak to them again to try to come to an agreement over a fee."

Smith added: "They've given us an idea of what they're looking for, so hopefully we can get something done."

The centre-back spent three seasons with Gramenet in Spain's Segunda Division before joining Espanyol in summer 2010. He initially played for the B side but made 10 appearances for the senior team last season.

Meanwhile, Sasa Papac admits he would love to be reunited with Carlos Cuellar in the Rangers defence.

Rangers have been trying for several weeks to secure a deal that would bring back Cuellar from Aston Villa, where the Spanish defender left for in 2008 following a successful solitary season at Ibrox, helping the club reach the UEFA Cup final.

Manager McCoist has admitted the trail has gone slightly cold but his left-back shares his enthusiasm in bringing back the former Osasuna player.

Papac told the club's website: "I know that the manager is interested in bringing Carlos Cuellar back to the club and that would be great.

"He is a very good player. We know how he can play after his great season with us before.''
