Negotiations with Benfica stalled last week and it was feared that Chelsea had missed the chance to sign the Brazil international, despite securing a work permit and being on the brink of completing the deal.

However, renewed negotiations have resulted in a deal being struck with Benfica and Luiz will now sign for Chelsea in a £25 million deal, with young midfielder Nemanja Matic moving the other way.

Luiz, 23, has been in fine form for Benfica in recent seasons and will complete with Alex and John Terry for a place in the heart of Carlo Ancelotti's defence.

Chelsea are also close to confirming the signing of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres in a deal worth a reported £50 million.
