The club were left in shock on Monday when announcing that Butcher, 29, had died at his home in Manchester. No cause of death was given.

Macclesfield have now cancelled their fixture at the weekend.

"Following the tragic news yesterday [Monday] of the tragic early death of Richard Butcher, Macclesfield Town have made a joint decision with Burton Albion and the Football League to postpone this weekend's match as a mark of respect," read a club statement.

"The club's reserve match with Accrington, scheduled for Wednesday this week, has also been postponed."

Macclesfield manager Gary Simpson has spoken of his grief at learning of Butcher's death, coming as it did just ten months after the death of his predecessor Keith Alexander.

"When Butch didn't turn up for training, I just sensed there was something wrong," Simpson said. "It just wasn't like him not to ring in and say there was a problem.

"So in the back of my mind I was worried but still couldn't believe it when I found out in the afternoon. I am utterly devastated.

"I was closer to Richard than any other player I've worked with. I was the one who first spotted him playing in non-league and convinced the Big Man [Keith Alexander] to give him his chance at Lincoln. So to lose both of them in the space of ten months is extremely hard to take."
