Inter looked to have fallen out of contention in the title race under Rafael Benitez and, after his appointment on Christmas Eve, Leonardo made the perfect start as two goals from Thiago Motta and one from Esteban Cambiasso ensured victory.

"I am satisfied to see the marriage between the coach and players has been a good fit so far," Moratti said. "Now the fightback begins.

"It won't be easy to climb up the table, but I certainly believe we can still win the Scudetto."

Cambiasso added: "It was important to win tonight. Leonardo has given us confidence again.

"It is too early to make comparisons between tacticians and we must thank everyone who worked with us. Benitez did a good job too and we hope to continue in this vein."
