Alex confident of World Cup place
Alex believes he can still squeeze into Brazil's World Cup squad, pipping promising Paris Saint-Germain teammate Marquinhos in the process.
Alex, 31, has managed to keep his place as first-choice partner for Thiago Silva at the heart of the PSG defence ahead of Marquinhos following the arrival of the teenage prodigy from Roma last summer.
With Silva certain to join Chelsea's David Luiz and Dante of Bayern Munich in the Selecao squad for next summer's tournament, coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will likely select one further centre-back to see him through the competition.
Alex told PSG's official website he hopes he will be chosen, despite having picked up the last of his 18 caps in 2009.
"It's very difficult to get into the Selecao, because the competition is fierce. Experts believe that three central defenders are almost certain to play at the World Cup. As the coach seems to want four, that means I still have a chance. By training hard, and if I string together good performances in the next four months, I can do it. I believe I can do it, anyway," the ex-PSV Eindhoven and Chelsea man claimed, adding he saw four PSG players featuring for the host nation.
"Thiago Silva and Maxwell are almost certain to go, and I cross my fingers for them. Lucas too, in my opinion, should be in the squad. He's a very important player for the team. That just leaves Marquinhos and me. One of us must go. I'm happy Marquinhos has already had that opportunity. He's a great hope of Brazilian football. He's an excellent player and a really good guy.".
