Gomez returns to Fiorentina fitness
Mario Gomez made his long-awaited return to training with Fiorentina on Wednesday, feeling obliged to remind people who he was.
The Germany international has been sidelined since damaging knee ligaments in his side's 1-1 draw with Cagliari back in September.
Even Viola coach Vincenzo Montella seemed confused when finding out the German would be able to train with the team once again this week after an almost five-month absence.
"Apparently, he's supposed to be back in training tomorrow," Montella told RAI television with an air of surprise after his side's 2-1 defeat to Udinese in the Coppa Italia on Tuesday night.
And Gomez did indeed make his highly-anticipated return to the football field in midweek, showing he had not lost his sense of humour by introducing himself to Montella as "Mario, the attacker" in a video published on the Florence club's website.
He proceeded to feign injury after his teammates celebrated his return before scoring an overhead kick to wipe away any further doubt that he is ready for a return to action. That will not happen overnight, though, with Montella suggesting he is unlikely to be in the squad to face Atalanta on Saturday.
"He's been out for over four months so his return will be gradual," he said. "It's still too soon for him to get back into action. Sometimes it can take two to three weeks, but it varies from player to player."
