Everton have announced that veteran defender Sylvain Distin has signed a one-year contract extension.

Distin, 36, moved to Goodison Park from Portsmouth for five million pounds in 2009, and has made 148 Premier League appearances for the club.

The Frenchman has continued to be a key player for the Toffees this season, and his absence through injury was felt during the Merseyside derby on Tuesday as his side lost 4-0 to Liverpool at Anfield.

However, manager Roberto Martinez has indicated that he expects Distin to be fit for Saturday’s Premier League home clash with Aston Villa.

His contract was due to expire this summer and a statement on Everton's official website confirmed that his fresh terms would keep him at Goodison Park until 2015.

He is the second Everton player in three days to agree a new deal, with England left-back Leighton Baines signing a contract through to 2018 on Monday.
