ESPN FC: Draxler to Arsenal?
Schalke chief-executive Clemens Tonnies said Germany midfielder Julian Draxler would be making a mistake if he opts to pursue a big money move to Arsenal in this transfer window.
Arsenal have been strongly linked with a move for the 20-year-old Germany international in this January transfer window, yet Tonnies has suggested the player needs to stay in his homeland to continue his development rather than make a hasty move to the Premier League.
Insisting Schalke do not need to sell Draxler for financial reasons, Tonnies has again reiterated the player is not certain to leave his club this month.
“Even if we do not qualify for next year's Champions League, that does not mean we will have to sell Julian,” he told Bild.
“There are a number of big clubs after him, but we have no intention of selling him this winter. I am of the opinion that Julian should play for Schalke next season. That is my personal advice to him.
“He should not let the interest from abroad play with his head. It is best for his development when he can play without much pressure and with a clear mind.
“Looking back, at the start of the season he was under a lot of pressure then and the exact same thing will happen again if he moves.”
Draxler would join a healthy collection of German stars at Arsenal if he does make the move to north London, with compatriots Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski, Mesut Ozil and Serge Gnabry all playing roles in the Gunners’ title charge this season.
It remains to be seen whether Draxler will add to the collection of German stars at Arsenal before the end of the month, yet the decision maker at his club suggesting reports that a deal is close for the youngster are wide of the mark.
