ESPN FC: A passing grade
Arsenal's Mesut Ozil is the only current Premier League player to feature in the UEFA.com team of the year, but Barcelona's Lionel Messi has not been named in the side.
Messi lost his FIFA Ballon d'Or award to Cristiano Ronaldo on Monday, and that was followed up by the announcement that he failed to make an XI made up from a poll of UEFA.com readers who were asked to select the best Europe-based players in a 4-4-2 formation.
Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a place in attack alongside Ronaldo, while Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus lines up alongside the world's most expensive player Gareth Bale, Ozil and Franck Ribery in a midfield not featuring a Barcelona player for the first time since 2007.
Ribery, who finished third in the vote for the FIFA Ballon d'Or award, is one of four members of Bayern Munich's all-conquering 2012-13 Treble-winning squad to make the side.
Ronaldo was picked for an eighth time, and for a record seventh year in a row. No English players were selected.
UEFA.com Team of the Year: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich); Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Thiago Silva (Paris Saint-Germain), Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich), David Alaba (Bayern Munich); Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich), Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund) Mesut Ozil (Arsenal and Germany), Gareth Bale (Real Madrid); Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Paris Saint-Germain).
