Karim Benzema headed home Luka Modric's cross from close range in the 18th minute for the opener before Jese added the second just before the hour mark.

The 20-year-old prodded the ball home moments after Cristiano Ronaldo missed a sitter to give his side a comfortable cushion ahead of the second leg on January 15.

In Thursday's other games, Real Sociedad drew 0-0 against Villarreal while Rayo Vallecano also played out a goalless draw at home to Levante.
