No Hull player has scored more than three league goals this season, and Bruce has been keen to strengthen his attack since missing out on a deal for West Bromwich Albion's Shane Long on the final day of the summer transfer window.

But while he has been linked with Celtic forward Georgios Samaras, he said he had not tried to buy Fletcher, who cost Sunderland 12 million pounds when he joined them from Wolves in 2012.

Bruce told talkSPORT: "I woke up this morning and saw a story that we'd bid eight million pounds. I just thought: 'Where on earth have they got that from?' I haven't got a clue where it's come from."
