"The midfielder, who is under contract at Schalke 04 until the summer of 2014, has asked sporting director Horst Heldt to allow him a change for the second half of the season," the statement read. "To consider other options the 32-year old will not travel to Qatar."

Jones has endured a difficult time in Schalke’s holding midfield, at times showing man-of-the-match performances, and at other times facing heavy criticism for his attitude on the pitch.

Following Schalke’s signing of Bayern Munich fringe player Jan Kirchhoff, the 32-year-old, who is hopeful of a spot on the United States' 2014 World Cup team, adjusted his plans.

Jones joined FC Schalke 04 from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2007, and has made a total of 129 appearances for the Royal Blues. He has scored 7 goals and set up another 13.

In the ongoing season, Jones has played a total of 22 games in all competitions for the Royal Blues, who will take on Real Madrid in the knockout stages of Champions League.
