Bayern Munich have announced the loan of Jan Kirchhoff to Bundesliga counterparts Schalke.
Kirchhoff, 23, has agreed an 18-month contract with Schalke, keeping him at the club until June 30, 2015.
The German defender will look to aid his new side's European chances, as they currently reside seventh in the table.
"I think this is a good decision for all three parties," Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club's official website.
"Jan will surely get match practice at Schalke, which in Munich so far was not possible. We wish him all the best and hope that he develops well and if necessary in 2015 returns to Bayern."
Schalke manager Horst Heldt said: "We are very pleased that this loan deal was possible, because I am convinced that we can help Jan.
"He can be used in central defence and as a defensive midfielder."
