KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Sporting Kansas City captain Jimmy Nielsen is retiring, two days after making a pair of saves during penalty kicks against Real Salt Lake to help his team win its first Major League Soccer's championship since 2000.

The 36-year-old Nielsen, MLS's goalkeeper of the year in 2012, spent four years with Kansas City after playing in England for Millwall (1994-95) and Leicester (2007-08), and in Denmark for AaB Aalborg (1995-07) and Vejl (2008-10).

He set Kansas City's team goalkeeping records for games (128), wins (57) and shutouts (45).
