Nathan Burns netted a brace as Newcastle Jets recorded a 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory to move up to third in the A-League.

The 25-year-old Australia striker, who is on loan from Korean club Incheon United until January, opened the scoring for the Jets on the brink of half-time before James Troisi equalised for Victory and Burns was on target with the winner after 66 minutes.

The Jets carved out half-chances in the first half but struggled to threaten Nathan Coe's goal until Burns struck his first A-League goal since netting for Adelaide in October 2007.

A great move down the left led to Adrian Leijer being dragged out of position and Adam Taggart's neat pass released Burns, who beat Coe at his near post.

Melbourne struck back five minutes after the break as Troisi collected the ball from Connor Pain and made no mistake as he fired a low shot past Mark Birighitti for his sixth goal of the season. But Newcastle claimed a winner after Burns picked up James Brown's cross and tucked the ball home to hand his side the three points and leave Victory sixth in the table.
