New Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen has told BBC Sport that the club must strengthen their squad in order to avoid relegation.

Mison: The nightmare is over

With Fulham 18th in the Premier League table, the club's chairman Shahid Khan acted by relieving manager Martin Jol of his duties on Sunday following Saturday's 3-0 loss at West Ham.

Former Manchester United coach Meulensteen, who arrived at Craven Cottage as a head coach only last month, has replaced his Dutch compatriot.

Speaking ahead of his first game in charge at home to Tottenham, Meulensteen has stressed the need for the Cottagers to make signings in January.

"Everyone needs to realise we must invest," Meulensteen told BBC Sport. "We need to look how we can strengthen this squad to ensure Fulham stay in the Premier League."
