Melbourne Victory have moved to fill the gap left by Ange Postecoglou by naming Jean-Paul de Marigny as assistant coach to Kevin Muscat.

De Marigny, who has two Socceroos caps, was most recently the coach of NSW state side Marconi Stallions.

He's also spent time in Socceroos youth structures and with A-League rivals Newcastle Jets, saying he was excited to be working with "the biggest club in Australia".

"Kevin and I have already had in-depth discussions about what this role will entail and given the excellent state of the club's squad and the high calibre of players on the list, I have no doubt the club is primed for success and I look forward to being part of that."

Muscat welcomed the appointment.

"We've essentially been a man down since Ange's departure and the entire coaching team have done a superb job assisting me in these past few weeks, but we certainly needed an extra pair of hands," Muscat said.

De Marigny starts the role immediately.
