Neither the striker, who has struggled with a groin problem for the last few weeks, nor the defender, who suffered concussion in the 1-0 win over Arsenal, travelled to Germany for Wednesday's game.

Manager David Moyes has been optimistic that two of his senior players would be fit to return after missing Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Cardiff and now hopes they will be in contention to face Tottenham at White Hart Lane at the weekend.

But the Scot said at his prematch news conference: "Both are injured. You knew Vidic had concussion, but we don't think Van Persie is quite ready yet. We're going to keep monitoring him. He had a bit of a problem with his groin. Neither are long term, but with the concussion we just want to give it a bit longer."

However, the versatile Phil Jones is in the squad after recovering from the groin injury he sustained in England’s 2-0 defeat to Chile.

The 21-year-old’s return is timely as, with Marouane Fellaini suspended and Michael Carrick sidelined, he provides Moyes with an option in midfield.

United are the Group A leaders but will lose their position at the top of the pool if Leverkusen defeat them at the BayArena.
