The plane carrying the club's travelling party was preparing to land at Cologne's Konrad Adenauer Airport on Tuesday afternoon when, just 400 metres from the ground, it had to pull up again as there was another aircraft on the runway.

The Monarch Airlines A321 -- flight number MON 9254 -- circled the airport and eventually landed safely 10 minutes later than scheduled at 17:40.

United defender Rio Ferdinand tweeted once safely on the ground:

The Premier League champions can secure their place in the last 16 with a game to spare in Group A with a win at the BayArena against Leverkusen, who are currently second in the Bundesliga.
