FIFA president Sepp Blatter says he was "sickened" to hear supporters of Spanish club Real Betis racially abuse their own player.

TV footage shows Betis fans appearing to make racist gestures and noises at defender Paulao, a Brazilian player who is black, as he left the field after being sent off in a 4-0 loss to city rivals Sevilla.

Blatter wrote on Twitter that he was horrified to hear of the incident and underlined his determination to combat racism with stronger measures, as he has stated on several occasions in recent times.

Real Betis had issued a statement via Twitter on Monday saying the club "condemns any violent or racist behaviour, whether directed at our own player or at an opponent."
