Vertonghen: City defeat was avoidable

Jan Vertonghen said Tottenham only have themselves to blame for their 6-0 thrashing at Manchester City and are desperate to prove they are a better side than they showed on Sunday when they face Manchester United next weekend.

Crace: Spurs flaws unavoidable

Spurs suffered their joint-heaviest defeat of the Premier League era at the Etihad Stadium but defender Vertonghen believes most of the goals were avoidable.

And the Belgium international is targeting Sunday’s home game against Manchester United as a chance to show their true colours.

Vertonghen said: "Manchester City score a lot of goals at home but we gave three or four of them away too easily. That is our own fault. They are a very strong team but I would love to play this game again next week because we are better than this.

"If you concede a goal after 15 seconds it is a bad thing if you want to win. We did well after that but then we conceded a second goal and it became a very difficult game for us."

Despite the thrashing, Vertonghen remains confident that Spurs can beat the defending champions at White Hart Lane.

He added: "We can solve the problem. We will talk and bounce back on Sunday against Manchester United. I know we have the support of our crowd and we can win that game on Sunday."
