Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has played down the seriousness of the injury that forced him off during the 5-0 romp against Almeria.

The Portugal international sent fears through the club after he was substituted just nine minutes into the second half with a muscle problem.

But talking after the game, the 28-year-old allayed those fears by admitting the substitution was for ‘precaution’ only.

''It was for precaution,'' Ronaldo said. ''It's nothing special. I was kicked in the first half and had the muscle a little stiff.''

And the risk of an injury crisis claiming La Liga’s leading scorer were further lessened by Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"I don't think it's important. He wasn't in pain. I think he will recover soon," said Ancelotti in quotes reported by the BBC.
