John Murtough, 40, is wanted at Old Trafford and the reigning champions have been in touch with the Premier League about securing his release, a source told ESPN.

Moyes worked with Murtough at Everton, where he was Head of Performance until joining the Premier League in October 2012, and where he played a pivotal part in the academy that produced Wayne Rooney and Ross Barkley.

Murtough, who has specialised in youth development, spent four years working at Fulham between 2004 and 2008 in-between his two spells at Everton.

Moyes has already brought four familiar faces from Everton to join him at Old Trafford, with Steve Round serving as assistant manager, Chris Woods as goalkeeping coach and both Phil Neville and Jimmy Lumsden working with the first team.

United’s youth team are currently under the guidance of academy director Brian McClair. It has been reported that Murtough will take a newly-created position, rather than replacing the Scot.
