Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper David Seaman has told talkSPORT he was “surprised” Manuel Pellegrini dropped Joe Hart.

Costel Pantilimon has been in goal for City in their last four games after Pellegrini omitted Hart following a series of mistakes.

The England international was notably at fault for goals scored by Cardiff’s Fraizer Campbell, Aston Villa’s Andreas Weimann, Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery and Chelsea’s Fernando Torres.

However, Seaman, who won 75 caps and was a first choice in four major international tournaments between 1996 and 2002, said: “Hart is brilliant. I was surprised he was dropped by City. He's a quality goalkeeper and is playing big-pressure games every week and you can't say that about the other goalkeepers.”

England manager Roy Hodgson has said Hart remains his No. 1 and Seaman added: "He's by far our best keeper and I was glad Roy came out and backed him.

“That's what you want as a goalkeeper. It's a shame his own [club] manager hasn't backed him as well.”
