Saido Berahino is working himself into an increasingly powerful position in his contract talks with West Bromwich Albion.

The 20-year-old from Burundi, who is being touted as a future future England international, is only contracted until next summer.

The Baggies also have a year’s option beyond that but are confident of securing his signature on a new long-term deal, possibly before he departs on his next international duty after this Saturday’s trip to Chelsea. But the asking price is steadily climbing.

Berahino’s strike in the 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace was his sixth goal in nine first-team games in 2013-14 -- a haul that also includes a match-winner at Manchester United and a Capital One Cup header against Arsenal.

With four goals in three England U21 appearances his star is rising rapidly as he reaps the rewards for the hard work he has put in to recover from the injury that cut short a promising loan spell at Peterborough last season.

"He is in the gym every day, lost a lot of weight and looks fit,” teammate James Morrison said. "He has been hungry to get in the first team and has taken his chance with two hands.

"We hope he can get signed up. Another goal is another few pounds. If he keeps doing what he is doing, it will come to him. He has all the attributes to go the top.

"He is a grounded lad. He has to keep working hard and I am sure he will do well.

"He was a bit big-time but he realised and has been a model professional. He will know it himself. He has not looked back."
