ESPN FC: A change of Hart?
Manuel Pellegrini is expected to pick Costel Pantilimon ahead of Joe Hart for Wednesday's Capital One Cup tie at Newcastle and give him the chance to displace the error-prone England international from his first-choice team.
• Mooney: Pantilimon's chance
Pantilimon's only appearance for Manchester City this season came in the last round of the Capital One Cup, when he kept a clean sheet in the 5-0 win over Wigan.
And Pellegrini is likely to stick with his policy of giving the Romanian game time in the competition when City visit St James' Park.
The City manager refused to back Hart when his last-minute mistake gifted Fernando Torres a goal and Chelsea a 2-1 victory against his side on Sunday.
"What I think, I won't talk about," he said then. "The analysis I do with individual players I do with the players, not the press."
It was the ninth time in 2013 that a Hart blunder cost either City or England a goal and this season he has been culpable for strikes by Cardiff's Fraizer Campbell, Aston Villa's Andreas Weimann and Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery.
After the 3-1 win over Everton, which came after the defeat to Bayern, Pellegrini admitted he had considered dropping Hart.
"It wasn't a simple decision [to pick him]," he said. "It was a very difficult decision."
Pantilimon, 26, joined City from FCU Poli in 2011 and is yet to make his Premier League debut. He has made 12 appearances, all in cup competitions.
He played throughout the FA Cup run last season but, after former manager Roberto Mancini had suggested he would be selected for the final, he was dropped and Hart picked for the Wembley defeat to Wigan.
