Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has dropped a strong hint he is ready to sign for Monaco when his contract expires at the end of the season.
• Tomas: Move on from Valdes
Valdes announced in the summer that he wanted to move abroad, and there was speculation then that he could have moved to Monaco as they spent heavily upon their promotion to Ligue 1.
The move did not come to pass, but the 31-year-old has indicated that he would happily move to the Stade Louis II at the end of the current campaign.
Asked about a move to Monaco in a Telefoot interview, Valdes replied: “Yes, I would like that, or even to play elsewhere in France, as Ligue 1 really appeals to me. That club is one of the potential options for me, so why not?”
On whether he had been in contact with Monaco during the summer, he said: “Yes, but this is something my agents deal with. But certainly Monaco is a good option.”
Eric Abidal is currently the Monaco captain after leaving the Camp Nou this summer, and Valdes said: “He is very happy there and I am very fond of Abidal. I consider him a brother. He is a great example as a human being. To play by his side is very special.”
Barca president Sandro Rosell has confirmed that the club still hope to retain Valdes, but the Spain international remains determined to move on.
“I have a contract until the end of the season with Barcelona,” Valdes said. “I spent over 20 years with the club. I have had the opportunity to win everything, so the adventure will come to and end when the season finishes.
“But I always want to win everything, and to set myself new goals.”
