Auckland City beat Phoenix in friendly

September 27, 2013

The Wellington Phoenix have gone down 1-0 to Auckland City in their final pre-season match before the start of the A-League soccer season.

Substitute Sam Burfoot scored in the 86th minute, firing home from 25 metres to give the home side a boost in their preparations for the Club World Cup in Morocco in December.

The Phoenix were missing new signings Kenny Cunningham and Carlos Hernandez, and fellow attacker Paul Ifill, for the fixture at Kiwitea Street.

Costa Rica internationals Cunningham and Hernandez were carrying niggles and weren't risked, while Ifill is recovering from a hamstring injury.

All three are expected to be available when the Phoenix open their season against the Brisbane Roar in Wellington on October 13.
