Real Madrid assistant Zinedine Zidane has hinted Mesut Ozil was sold to Arsenal because he lacked the will to fight for his spot in the Spanish capital.
Ozil broke Arsenal’s transfer record when he joined the club earlier this month before admitting he would have joined the Gunners for free.
Ozil’s departure from the Madrid was offset by the club’s purchase of Isco, Asier Illarramendi, Daniel Carvajal and the world record breaking purchase of Gareth Bale.
And despite admitting it was Ozil’s decision to leave Madrid, Zidane implied the German international had not ‘reacted’ well to the increased competition in the squad.
"Ozil decided to leave," he told the club's official channel. "He is a good player who has given us so much so we wish him well.
"There are players who have responded with strength and will to fight for a place, but not everyone reacted the same.
"[Angel] Di Maria responded well and wanted to fight."
