Johan Cruyff to support Ajax vs. Barca
Johan Cruyff says he will be supporting Ajax against Barcelona when his two former sides meet in their Champions League Group H opener at the Camp Nou next Wednesday.
Cruyff’s position as possibly the most important figure in the histories of both clubs is to the fore again as they prepare for what will be a first ever competitive meeting between the teams.
Much of the focus in Catalonia has been on the troubled relationship between the Dutchman and current Barca president Sandro Rosell, with the pair having fallen out seriously at least in part due to Rosell’s ongoing feud with the club’s former chief Joan Laporta.
‘El Flaco’ told RTL, in comments picked up by Sport, that his ‘differences’ with Rosell meant he hoped Ajax won Wednesday’s game.
"I will support Ajax," Cruyff said. "I have had some differences with Barcelona’s president. I will not set foot in the Camp Nou as long as he is there."
The famously abrasive Cruyff is not exactly popular at the Amsterdam Arena either, having most recently left the club after a bitter boardroom dispute in late 2011.
Cruyff said his preference for the upcoming game did not mean he was a fan of current Ajax coach Frank de Boer.
"Just because someone has a driving licence does not mean they are capable of driving a Formula 1 car," he said when asked for his views on De Boer -- who has taken Ajax to three successive Eredivisie titles.
