Liverpool defender Glen Johnson suffered a high ankle sprain during Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Manchester United on Sunday.

The defender, 29, was forced to withdraw from the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine with the knock and left Anfield on crutches.

After being examined by Liverpool’s medical staff at Melwood, Johnson has been advised to rest before undergoing further checks.

Liverpool have declined to name a possible return date although it is hoped he could be in contention for the Premier League game against Swansea on September 16.
