Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez had to undergo groin surgery on Tuesday and is set for a three-week spell on the sidelines, according to Bild.

Schaaf: A bit of redemption

Martinez scored the last-gasp equaliser in the UEFA Super Cup victory against Chelsea on Friday, but Bayern announced the following day that the Spain international had stretched his knee ligaments and required five days’ rest.

However, his ongoing groin problems -- which had flared up after Spain’s recent friendly in Ecuador and caused him to miss the 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt -- have now made surgery inevitable.

After the Super Cup, Martinez had told reporters: “I can play for 20, 30 minutes okay but then I have problems and am in pain time and time again.”

Bayern have a number of injuries to midfielders, with Mario Gotze also ruled out for three weeks after the Super Cup, while Thiago Alcantara is out until November and Bastian Schweinsteiger struggling for fitness since undergoing an ankle operation in June.
