Chelsea have signed Porto striker Christian Atsu for a reported fee of £3.5 million and immediately loaned him to Vitesse Arnhem.

Atsu, 21, has signed a five-year deal with the Blues but will spend the season in the Eredivisie where he will play alongside fellow Chelsea loanees Cristian Cuevas, Lucas Piazon, Gael Kakuta and Patrick van Aanholt.

The Ghana international made 17 appearances for the Portuguese champions last season, including eight in the Champions League and has also represented his country in the Africa Cup of Nations.

On the official Chelsea website, Atsu is described as "a left-footed attacker, capable of playing as a winger or a second striker."

His goals at international level earned him the nickname "the Ghanaian Messi," however, he played this down when speaking to BBC Sport in September last year.

He said: "Messi is my idol. There's no Ghanaian Messi, there is no other Messi in this world."

"I can never play even 1% of what Messi is doing. It's impossible."
