Clichy would be open to MLS switch

August 27, 2013

Manchester City defender Gael Clichy has said he could be open to an MLS move after his former Arsenal team-mate Thierry Henry, now at New York Red Bulls, recommended it to him.

Clichy, 28, told Goal Henry had said the league was “getting bigger each year” and added: "He says he loves New York. It makes you think that, if the opportunity comes, why not try MLS?

"The chance to be a part of a new league that is growing bigger and bigger year after year -- that’s a great challenge.

“The way he’s talking about it means that he loves it. It makes me want to try it if the possibility comes."

However, Clichy stressed that such a plan was something for the future, saying he was in no rush to leave City or European football.

City recently invested in an MLS franchise, New York City FC, which will begin playing in 2015. "That’s the first time in history that a Premier League club is opening a team in MLS and, even more, it’s in New York," Clichy said.

"Hopefully the chance will come later on to be able to be a part of this. We can tell people are really up for it and excited about another team in New York City in MLS. "
