ESPN FC: Narrow win for Real
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti backed goalkeeper Diego Lopez to retain his position after the club claimed a 1-0 win over Granada on Monday.
Lopez has started in goals for the first two games of the season, and despite Spain custodian, Iker Casillas, waiting on the bench, Ancelotti is not considering making a change in goals after the club recorded two straight clean sheets.
“Diego Lopez played the first game and now he has played the second game,” Ancelotti said.
“He is playing well at the moment. There is nothing more. The pressure is fuel to me (regarding the focus on the decision).”
Madrid joined a host of clubs at the top of La Liga on six points after Karim Benzema scored the only goal of the game in the 10th minute.
And despite singling out Benzema for special praise, Ancelotti said he was pleased with the team’s overall performance despite Granada making life difficult for the capital club.
“Benzema is playing well and scoring. He has started well in the league,” he added.
”The team was balanced. Luka Modric and Isco played well. Isco had to sacrifice a bit because he can attack more. The work of [Angel] Di Maria was also important.
“I saw the Barcelona match and it was also difficult for them. At the moment the most important thing is to get points and work for the short term.”
