Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has undergone surgery on a broken metatarsal.

Alonso, 31, who underwent an operation on his groin in June, broke the fifth metatarsal in his left foot at Madrid’s Valdebebas training facility last week and is expected to be out for at least a month as a result.

Los Blancos confirmed the news via a statement on their official website on Monday.

The statement read: “Xabi Alonso has had surgery on a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone of his right foot. The operation was conducted with as few invasive techniques as possible.”

Alonso will miss Spain's World Cup qualifying match away to Finland on September 6, while he could also be absent for the final two Group I games, against Belarus and Georgia, in October.
