Borussia Dortmund are hopeful of persuading midfielder Ilkay Gundogan to sign a new contract with the club.

Gundogan, 22, has become one of the Westfalenstadion side’s most influential players in recent times, although his current deal is set to expire in 2015.

The Germany international has been linked with a transfer to the likes of Real Madrid over the summer, and kicker claims that he will move on if an extension is not agreed upon.

However, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke is confident the club will keep hold of their man and says talks regarding a new deal are set to start soon.

“I believe he will stay. At this stage of his career he knows what he has at Dortmund,” Watzke said.

Gundogan is currently sidelined with a back injury with Bild reporting that he may need to undergo surgery, while kicker states he will not be available for Dortmund’s next game away to Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.

“This injury is no kid’s birthday party,” Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said, before adding that he will be back to full fitness within a couple of weeks.

According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Gundogan returned to Dortmund on Monday, but was not involved in team training.
