Montella sick of Adem Ljajic saga
Adem Ljajic is unlikely to feature in Fiorentina’s Serie A opener against Catania on Monday with his future at the club is shrouded in doubt, and coach Vincenzo Montella has said he is “really sick” of the saga.
AC Milan have seen offers for the Serbian midfielder rejected, while Roma are also believed to be keen on the 21-year-old, whose contract expires next summer.
The player has been offered a new deal by the Viola but Montella said he was unlikely to play while he ponders his future.
“I’m really sick of this whole situation,” the coach told a press conference. “I don’t have the time, the will or the patience to wait -- in part because the lad is not relaxed about this. From my perspective, which is a technical assessment, I’ve got to follow my own plan.”
Montella has included Ljajic in his 23-man squad for the Catania clash but, as at Grasshoppers in the Europa League last Thursday, he is likely to be on the bench with Montella fearing repercussions from the fans.
“I don’t know how they will welcome him,” he added. “Everybody should do what they feel is best -- both the fans and the player -- but I don’t think any whistles would have any influence on the whole issue or on the player.”
Should Ljajic turn down Fiorentina’s offer of a contract extension, his sale this summer would be more likely. As well as the two Serie A suitors, Atletico Madrid may then throw their hat into the ring with just a week to go before the transfer window closes, with coach Diego Simeone having hinted at an interest.
