Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is to miss Schalke’s Champions League play-off against PAOK Salonika, having been ruled out for a month with a knee injury.
Huntelaar, 30, was forced to come off at half time during the Royal Blues’ 4-0 Bundesliga loss to Wolfsburg on Saturday after colliding with opposition goalkeeper Diego Benaglio.
As a result, the Netherlands international will be absent for both legs against PAOK, who are coached by former Schalke boss Huub Stevens.
The German side will now face an uphill challenge in trying to qualify for the group stages of Europe’s elite competition, with Huntelaar having been a vital source of goals for Schalke since arriving from AC Milan in 2010.
The striker has hit 80 goals in 119 appearances for the club, including 21 in 27 in Europe.
Schalke host PAOK in the first leg on Wednesday, before travelling to Greece for the return game on August 27.
