Adelaide United defender Iain Fyfe has been released from the final two years of his A-League contract to join Iranian club Mes Kerman.

The 31-year-old has spent the last week in the city in the country's southwest and requested a release from his Reds contract on Friday.

"Last night we agreed to release Iain from the last two seasons of his contract after informing us that he was eager to make the move, Adelaide United general manager of Football Operations Michael Petrillo said in a statement on Saturday.

"While it is always sad when a player who has been a great servant of the club leaves, we are really happy for him with the opportunity he has been given and thank him for the contribution he has made here and wish him all the best for the future."

The Reds open the 2012/13 A-League season with a trip west to meet Perth Glory on October 13 but Petrillo said the club was in no hurry to sign a replacement for Fyfe.

The former underage Australian representative Fyfe made 86 appearances for Adelaide, including 75 A-League games for five goals.
