Borussia Dortmund could face another ‘Group of Death’ in the Champions League despite reaching last season’s final.

Dortmund faced Real Madrid, Manchester City and Ajax in Group D last year as they were seeded in Pot Four. For the 2013-14 competition, they will be seeded in Pot Three.

They will therefore face one of the top seeds -- Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United are potential opponents -- and one from Pot Two, which may see them take on Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk or AC Milan.

Pot Four currently contains big-spending Napoli -- though that may change depending on the results of the play-off round -- but they cannot face Bayer Leverkusen, also in the final pot, as they are from the same country.

Dortmund’s predicament is the result of previous failures in Europe. UEFA rankings take into account the previous five years, and BVB did not play in Europe in 2008-09 or 2009-10, while they exited the Europa League at the group stage in 2010-11 and then fell at the first hurdle in the Champions League in 2011-12.
