Wayne Rooney is expected to be fit enough to feature for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield against Wigan -- if David Moyes opts to select him.

• Rooney has heart set on move to Chelsea

After training with United’s reserves on Thursday and Friday, Rooney believes he can be in contention, a source has told ESPN. The unsettled striker sat out Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial against Sevilla on Friday, meaning he has not appeared in any of the Premier League champions’ pre-season friendlies.

Apart from a behind-closed-doors friendly against Real Betis last week, Rooney has not appeared for United since the defeat to Chelsea on May 5.

The England international is a transfer target for Chelsea, who have had two bids for the 27-year-old rejected, while United have insisted he is not for sale.

But injuries have meant Rooney has not appeared for his former Everton manager Moyes in United’s colours.

He flew home from the club’s pre-season tour of Asia and Australia with a hamstring problem and then missed Tuesday’s draw with AIK Solna because of a shoulder injury.
