Carney to join Cahill in New York

August 8, 2013

Forgotten Socceroos defender David Carney is set to join Tim Cahill at the New York Red Bulls.

The 29-year-old just needs his visa to be cleared and to pass a medical to link up with the Major League Soccer outfit.

Carney's signing ends a near year-long search for a club after being cut by FC Bunyodko in Uzbekistan.

"David is an experienced international player, who can play on the left side both as a defender and a midfielder, and he provides us much needed cover," Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh said.

"He is versatile and athletic and has competed at a high level.

"We are pleased to bring David to New York and look forward to his contribution as a member of the Red Bulls."

Carney has suffered a succession of shoulder injuries and faded from Australia's plans for next year's World Cup.
