Bastos ends Schalke loan to join Al-Ain
Brazil international Michel Bastos has completed his move from Lyon to United Arab Emirates side Al-Ain, signing a three-year deal with the club.
Bastos, 30, left Lyon in January for an 18-month loan spell at Schalke but has now cut that short and departed the Stade Gerland permanently.
As part of the loan agreement with Schalke, the Royal Blues were given the opportunity to sign him within five days of Al-Ain first expressing an interest in Bastos.
But the Bundesliga club opted pushing for a long-term deal, with Bastos himself favouring a move to move to the Gulf.
Schalke confirmed the move, with Schalke general manager Horst Heldt said saying: "The UAE outfit Al-Ain FC recently made an offer for Bastos and the player also requested a transfer. We would have had to buy the player and we didn’t want to do that."
According to media reports, Schalke could have bought Bastos, who played as a left-back during Brazil’s 2010 World Cup campaign in South Africa, for €4 million.
Heldt added that in not buying the player, Schalke also “complied with Bastos’ wish” Bastos scored four goals in 14 Bundesliga games for the Royal Blues during the second half of last season.
In pre-season he had lost his place in left midfield to Schalke’s summer signing Christian Clemens.
