Former Real Madrid manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo has been appointed as the new coach of Brazilian champions Fluminense.

Fluminense parted company with their former boss Abel Braga this week following a run of five straight defeats.

It is now down to Luxemburgo, who was sacked by Gremio earlier this year, to get them back on track, with the side currently in the relegation zone.

"This team lost only three matches when it won the 2012 Brazilian title," Luxemburgo said. "We have to restore that type of confidence to try to put Fluminense back atop of the standings, which is where it belongs."

The Brazilian, who has signed a deal until the end of the year, added: "The goal will be to secure Fluminense in next year's Copa Libertadores and hopefully we will be able to contend for the league title as well."
